1. Cruise Center Beach

   Also called SunRay Beach, it stretches on either side of the port, so you can step from the pier onto the sand. It is the easiest beach picture of any Caribbean stop.

2. Governor's Beach

   A scenic beach within walking distance, though you take the inland roads to get to it. Jack's Shack, about a mile from the port on Governor's Beach, serves jerk chicken, conch fritters and grilled seafood.

3. Boaby Rock Point

   Just south of the cruise port and within walking distance, with excellent snorkeling in the clear water off the rocks.

4. The lighthouse and Cockburn Town

   You can visit the lighthouse and walk through historic Cockburn Town, three miles from the port, with its narrow, colorful streets and the Turks and Caicos National Museum, which tells the story of the islands.

5. Rides through town

   Grand Turk has no buses or public transport, but you can rent cars, golf carts, ATVs, scooters and bicycles, and the last two are ideal for the narrow streets of Cockburn Town.

How the light works

The island is flat, low and bright, and the sun bounces off the white sand, so a phone tends to make faces dark. Tap the faces on the screen, or use the shade of a palm at the edge of the beach. The lighthouse stands out against a deep blue sky in the morning, and Cockburn Town's pastel walls look best in the soft light of late afternoon.

Before you go ashore

Cockburn Town is three miles from the cruise port, and you can walk it, but there are no sidewalks along the way and the weather can get scorching, so most people rent a bicycle or a golf cart, or take a taxi. The walk from Cockburn Town center back to the port entrance takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Take water and sunscreen.
