1. The Progreso pier

   Cruise ships dock on a pier about 1,000 feet long with berths for two ships, set at right angles to the world's longest pier, Terminal Remota, which runs around four miles out to sea. It makes a good picture from the deck, before you even step off.

2. Playa Progreso

   A long strip of beach along the Gulf of Mexico that you can walk to from the port terminal. Local vendors rent chairs and umbrellas, and the beach feels relaxed and local rather than resort-like.

3. The Malecon

   The seafront promenade beside the beach, lined with places to eat and full of music, people and the sound of the waves. It is the easiest place for a candid picture.

4. Merida and the Maya sites

   The Yucatan's capital and largest city is about 17 miles inland, and shore excursions reach Dzibilchaltun, Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is about 71 miles beyond Merida, so it is a long day.

5. The cenotes

   There are hundreds of cenotes, natural sinkholes with cool clear water, close to Progreso, and excursions visit them. The light falling through the opening is the picture.

How the light works

The beach faces north into the Gulf, and the midday sun is high and harsh, so keep the beach picture for the morning and use the malecon's shade in the afternoon. At a cenote, light comes in a single beam from the opening, so have people stand in it and use the water's reflection for the rest.

Before you go ashore

The ship docks at the end of a long pier, so plan on time to reach the shore before the day starts, and again on the way back. The beach and the malecon are within walking distance of the terminal. Merida and the Maya sites are all-day excursions, so book with a tour that guarantees your return before the ship sails.
