1. The White Pass and Yukon Route railroad

How the light works

Skagway sits at the head of a narrow valley with mountains on both sides, so the light on the street changes quickly as the sun clears the ridges. Shoot Broadway Street once the sun reaches the storefronts and use the open ground at Yakutania Point for wide pictures with the mountains behind you. On the railroad, the light through the pass is dramatic, so keep the phone ready at every stop.

Before you go ashore

The docks are a short walk from Broadway Street, and the town is small enough to see on foot. The railroad and the big excursions leave on their own schedules, so book them ahead and watch the all-aboard time. Layers matter here: the valley can be warm on the street and cold at the pass.
